POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Ukrainian forces have reportedly confined approximately 2,500 Russian soldiers to a slender strip of land extending into the Black Sea. This area, known as the Kinburn Spit, is located in Ukraine’s Mykolaiv region.
According to Ukrainian commanders, drone attacks have effectively cut off the delivery of ammunition and food to the stranded troops. A reconnaissance commander, identified by the call sign ‘Yava,’ revealed that intercepted communications from the Russian soldiers express their desperation and reluctance to approach the area due to the high risk of death.
In a separate incident, NATO fighter jets were deployed in eastern Europe following a Russian aerial assault on Ukraine that resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals in the Kyiv region. In response to the attack, Finland and Latvia imposed restrictions on air and maritime traffic near Russia.
The Ukrainian air force spokesperson, Yuriy Ihnat, disclosed that Russia launched over 2,800 jet-powered drones at Ukraine in August. The interception rate for these drones, which are more challenging to shoot down due to their higher speed, was approximately 60 percent.
Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned of a severe response from Moscow to any hostile actions in the Baltic region. She emphasized that Russia’s reaction to such ventures would be both decisive and devastating.
Additionally, Russia is set to announce a new ambassador to the UK, following the departure of the previous envoy amid escalating tensions between the two countries. Zakharova clarified that the appointment of a new ambassador is President Vladimir Putin’s prerogative and not a matter of public discussion.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine for the sake of humanity during a meeting in Kyrgyzstan. Modi highlighted the need to transition from continuous conflict to a cessation of hostilities.

Furthermore, Ukrainian drone strikes have reportedly destroyed a significant portion of Russia’s artillery and self-propelled guns stationed on the Kinburn Spit.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent informed Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov that there would be no economic relief or agreements on other issues until the war in Ukraine concludes. This discussion took place on the sidelines of a G20 finance leaders meeting.

Russian strikes targeted port infrastructure in Ukraine’s southern Black Sea region of Odesa, resulting in damage to a sewing shop and a residential building, with one person injured. A fire also broke out at a regional checkpoint following the attack.
