POLICY WIRE — Millinocket, Maine — At 91 years old, Dale Sanders has once again claimed the title of the oldest hiker to complete the Appalachian Trail. Despite falling 71 times, including six severe falls, Sanders persevered through the 2,193-mile journey.

Sanders, known by his trail name Grey Beard, first set the record in 2017 at age 82. His friend M.J. Eberhart briefly held the title, but Sanders announced his return to reclaim it.

Starting in West Virginia on September 6, Sanders completed the trail on August 31 atop Maine’s Mount Katahdin. He paused to pray at the summit sign, expressing gratitude to God, his support team, and everyone who helped him.

Though his latest hike was more challenging than his first, Sanders remained determined. He faced obstacles like downed trees and steep climbs with vigor, even taking a brief nap during a 12-mile hike before continuing.
