Galliano’s Met Gala Exhibition Cancelled Following Public Outrage

POLICY WIRE — New York City, USA — The much-anticipated John Galliano exhibition, planned to coincide with the 2027 Met Gala, has been officially cancelled by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the designer himself, following intense public backlash.

Galliano announced on social media that after extensive reflection and discussions with all parties involved, he has decided with great regret that the exhibition should not proceed at this time. The Met confirmed the cancellation of the spring 2027 exhibition, which was to showcase Galliano’s four-decade career.

The decision to feature Galliano’s work, known for its theatrical and dramatic style, ignited controversy earlier this month due to his history of antisemitic and racist comments. These remarks resulted in his dismissal from Christian Dior in 2011 and a hate crime conviction in France.

In his statement, Galliano expressed, I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my past words, especially the hurt I inflicted on the Jewish and Asian communities, and I am profoundly sorry.

The Met has indicated that it will reveal details about a new spring Costume Institute exhibition and the 2027 Met Gala at a future date.
