Gina Hinojosa’s Bold Strategy: Leveraging Voter Outrage to Challenge Texas Governorship

POLICY WIRE — Austin, Texas — In a surprising turn of events, state legislator Gina Hinojosa is making headlines in Texas with her bold campaign strategy targeting Governor Greg Abbott. Hinojosa is focusing on two contentious issues: AI data centers and Flock cameras, which have sparked widespread voter discontent.

Hinojosa expressed her concerns in an interview with The Independent, stating, “There are just no rules. There are no laws. There are no protections.” She criticized Abbott for his support of data centers, arguing that they represent government favoritism towards corporate interests over community needs.

The University of Texas-Austin and the Texas Politics Project’s latest poll reveals a narrowing gap between Hinojosa and Abbott, with a five-point difference. Notably, 57 percent of Texas voters oppose data center construction in their communities, including 43 percent of Republicans and 54 percent of independents.

Hinojosa advocates for a moratorium on new data centers until regulations are established. She highlighted the concerns of rural community residents, who have requested basic infrastructure improvements like traffic lights due to the increased traffic from data centers.

In response to growing opposition, Abbott signed an executive order in August to audit existing data centers and temporarily halt new constructions. However, Hinojosa believes it may be too late to sway public opinion.

Data centers have also become a significant issue in other states’ gubernatorial races. In Florida, Democratic candidate David Jolly is campaigning against Republican Byron Donalds, criticizing both crime and data centers. Similarly, in Wisconsin, Democratic candidate Francesca Hong has taken a strong stance against data centers, contrasting with the more moderate position of David Crowley.

Hinojosa’s campaign is further bolstered by the high cost of living and Trump’s deportation policies, which have alienated Hispanic voters. She believes this has created an opportunity for her to appeal to a broader base, including disaffected Trump supporters.

Adding to her campaign’s momentum, Hinojosa has recently launched an ad criticizing Abbott’s support for Flock cameras, which have raised privacy concerns among Texans. The Texas Department of Public Safety approved a $26 million contract for these cameras, despite no authorizing laws being passed.

In a recent development, The Texas Tribune reported that Abbott has ordered state agencies to halt funding for the cameras, possibly in response to mounting public pressure.
