POLICY WIRE — Liberty, Missouri — William Jewell College is in mourning following the sudden death of junior running back MicahJo Barnett. Barnett experienced a medical emergency on the sideline shortly after scoring a touchdown during the team’s season opener against Fort Lewis College on Saturday.
Local police in Liberty, Missouri, confirmed that emergency responders attended to a player approximately 20 minutes after the game’s kickoff. Barnett was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance but was later pronounced dead.
The college expressed its grief on its football website, posting a message titled “Jewell Mourns Loss of Football Student-Athlete MicahJo Barnett.” The post included a black and white photo of Barnett with the words “Forever a Cardinal” and the years 2005-2026.
Barnett scored a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:15 left in the first quarter. The game was halted with 4:32 remaining in the quarter following a punt by Fort Lewis College. At the time of the suspension, Barnett had accumulated six carries for 30 yards and a touchdown, with his team leading 7-0.
The college has made counseling services and the office of the chaplain available to students and staff. A vigil was scheduled in honor of Barnett and his family for Saturday night.

Barnett, a native of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, was entering his third season with William Jewell. In his previous two seasons, he amassed 457 yards and six touchdowns over 13 games. During his senior year of high school, he earned all-Missouri state honors and was part of a state championship-winning team.
