POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — British tennis players Katie Boulter and Fran Jones have expressed concerns over the smell of cannabis at the US Open. The aroma, wafting from nearby Corona Park, has become a noticeable distraction for some players.
Marijuana is legal for adults in New York, but smoking is prohibited on the US Open site. Despite this, the scent has been detected around some outdoor courts.
Last year, World No 20 Casper Ruud criticized the smell, calling it the “worst thing” about the city. Court 17, closest to the park, was even nicknamed “hash court” in Denmark.
Boulter shared her experience, stating she noticed the smell during practice and matches. She emphasized the need for focus and the unwanted distraction it presents. Jones, on the other hand, joked about the situation, suggesting it might even enhance her performance.
