POLICY WIRE — Berlin, Germany — Berlin state agencies are dealing with a severe ransomware attack. The Rhysida group claimed responsibility for stealing 5.79 terabytes of sensitive data from Berlin government agencies.
The stolen data includes 46,500 contracts, emails, phone numbers, passwords, and classified information. The Rhysida group announced it will auction the stolen data after Berlin officials refused to pay the ransom.
Berlin’s government confirmed an extortion attempt following the data theft from its state network. The full scope of the exfiltrated data is still under review. The breach exposed personal information on over 12,000 individuals and 124,823 geodata files.
Security experts note that Berlin’s decision not to pay the ransom sets a precedent but risks the public release of sensitive data. The Rhysida group previously claimed responsibility for a ransomware attack on the British Library in 2023, demanding 20 bitcoins, then worth approximately $850,000.
