POLICY WIRE — Oslo, Norway — King Harald V of Norway, the continent’s oldest reigning monarch, passed away on Friday. He was 89 years old.
The royal court confirmed his death at the National Hospital in Oslo at 6:35 a.m. Harald, who steadfastly refused to abdicate despite his advanced age, was succeeded by his son, who is now King Haakon VIII.
Harald’s life was marked by significant historical events, including his family’s exile during the Nazi occupation of Norway. He was just three years old when the Nazis invaded, leading his mother to flee with him and his sisters to the United States, while his father and grandfather sought refuge in Britain.
Upon returning to Norway after World War II, Harald pursued education at public schools, the Norwegian military college, and Oxford University. He shared his father’s passion for sailing, representing Norway in several Olympics and winning gold in the World Championships in 1987.
Despite pressure to marry within European nobility, Harald chose to wed his childhood sweetheart, Sonja Haraldsen. Their marriage, which produced two children, was widely celebrated and strengthened the monarchy.
As king, Harald modernized the royal house and delivered poignant speeches, including one following the 2011 attacks by Anders Behring Breivik and another in 2016 advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and religious tolerance.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed the nation’s grief, praising Harald’s unwavering faith in the Norwegian people and his role in fostering unity and pride.
The Norwegian monarchy, like others in Europe, holds a largely ceremonial role, with true political power resting in the hands of the elected parliament. Harald’s reign coincided with an economic boom driven by oil and gas.
The royal family faced challenges, including scrutiny over Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s associations and a high-profile conviction involving her son. Despite these issues, Harald maintained his commitment to the throne, refusing to abdicate even after health concerns arose.
