Trump Considers Renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America Amid Trade Tensions

POLICY WIRE — Windsor, Ontario — As the trade war between the United States and Canada intensifies, U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America. This proposal has been met with strong opposition from Canadians.

Patricia Wiseman, an Ontario resident, expressed her disapproval, stating that it will never happen as Canadians are strong. Trump has the authority to change how the U.S. government recognizes geographic places, but he cannot force Canada or its citizens to adopt his naming conventions.

Trump introduced the idea of renaming the easternmost area of the Great Lakes just before Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced reciprocal tariffs on U.S. imports. The U.S. and Canada are currently engaged in a trade dispute, with the Trump administration imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed Trump’s threat as rhetoric and called for both countries to resume negotiations. The lake’s name, derived from the Huron Indigenous people’s word “oniatari:io,” meaning “lake of shining waters,” predates European settlement. There is no single international body that determines names of international bodies of water.

While some U.S. residents support the renaming, many Canadians and international bodies do not recognize such changes. This situation mirrors previous renaming efforts by Trump, such as the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which were not acknowledged by Mexico or other countries.
