POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — A federal judge has struck down a visa ban imposed by the Trump administration, which affected 75 countries. The ruling asserts that Sen. Marco Rubio exceeded his authority in implementing the policy.
The decision came after two nonprofit organizations and 11 individuals, including six whose family members were denied visas, filed a lawsuit challenging the policy. The judge’s ruling stated that the visa restrictions were not within the scope of authority granted to Rubio.
“The court finds that the visa ban oversteps the legal boundaries set for Sen. Rubio’s authority,” the ruling stated. “Therefore, the policy is deemed null and void.”
The plaintiffs argued that the visa ban caused significant personal and familial hardships. One plaintiff, whose spouse was denied a visa, said, “This ruling brings a sense of relief and justice. We hope it allows families to reunite without unnecessary barriers.”
The Trump administration has not yet commented on the ruling or indicated whether it plans to appeal the decision.
