POLICY WIRE — Newcastle, UK — Authorities have arrested two men in connection with the mysterious death of 22-year-old soldier Liam Potts, whose body was recovered from the River Tyne. The incident occurred shortly after a car crashed into pedestrians nearby.
Liam Potts was last seen entering the river mere minutes after the car incident. Emergency services responded promptly, but efforts to save Potts were unsuccessful. The two suspects, aged 28 and 34, were taken into custody on suspicion of involvement in the soldier’s death.
“We are treating this as a priority investigation and are leaving no stone unturned to establish the full circumstances surrounding Liam’s death,” stated Detective Inspector Jane Collins of Northumbria Police. “We urge anyone with information to come forward to assist us in our inquiries.”
The car involved in the crash has been seized for forensic examination. Initial reports suggest that the vehicle may have been driven recklessly prior to the incident. Eyewitnesses described seeing a group of people fleeing the scene immediately after the crash.
Liam Potts, a private in the British Army, was stationed at a local barracks. His commanding officer expressed shock and sadness over the tragic event. “Liam was a dedicated soldier with a bright future ahead of him. His loss is deeply felt by everyone who knew him,” the officer said.
The community has been left shaken by the incident, with many calling for a thorough investigation. Local residents have set up a makeshift memorial at the riverbank, laying flowers and tributes in honor of Potts.
As the investigation continues, authorities have appealed for calm and patience. “We understand the community’s concerns and are committed to providing answers and justice for Liam and his family,” Inspector Collins added.
