POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — During the initial term of former President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump orchestrated significant changes to the White House Rose Garden. Among the alterations, a notable inclusion was the placement of a work by Japanese American artist Isamu Noguchi. This marked the first time an Asian American artist was featured in the White House collection.
The redesigned garden, unveiled in September 2020, featured fewer flowers and an increased number of statues and stone elements. The incorporation of Noguchi’s piece, a black basalt sculpture titled “Atlas,” was part of a broader effort to modernize and diversify the garden’s aesthetic.
Isamu Noguchi, renowned for his innovative approach to sculpture and landscape design, brought a unique element to the historic space. His work, which often explores the relationship between nature and human-made structures, aligns with the garden’s new emphasis on geometric forms and minimalist design.
The redesign also included the addition of a stone patio, new seating areas, and a refreshed layout intended to enhance the garden’s use for events and public appearances. The changes were part of a $2.5 million renovation project that aimed to restore and update the garden while preserving its historical significance.
Melania Trump’s vision for the Rose Garden was to create a space that could serve multiple functions, from formal state dinners to casual public enjoyment. The inclusion of Noguchi’s sculpture not only added artistic value but also represented a step towards greater cultural diversity within the White House grounds.
