POLICY WIRE — Austin, Texas — Infowars host Alex Jones has secured a partial victory in a Texas court, where a judge reduced one of the defamation lawsuit judgments against him by more than $40 million. Jones had been ordered to pay substantial damages for claiming the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax. Despite this reduction, he still faces over $1 billion in total damages from various lawsuits.
The Texas court’s decision specifically addressed the judgment awarded to the parents of a child killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre. Originally, Jones was ordered to pay $45.2 million in damages, which has now been reduced to $4.1 million for past and future defamation, and an additional $1 million in punitive damages. This reduction comes as part of ongoing legal battles stemming from Jones’ false claims about the shooting.
Jones continues to face significant financial liabilities. In Connecticut, he was ordered to pay nearly $1.5 billion in damages to families of Sandy Hook victims. Additionally, he owes substantial amounts from other defamation suits related to his hoax claims. The recent Texas ruling does not absolve him of these other financial obligations.
The legal proceedings against Jones highlight the severe consequences of spreading false information, particularly regarding tragic events. The court’s decisions aim to hold individuals accountable for the harm caused by their statements.
