POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The Met Office has announced a public vote to determine which character from the Wallace and Gromit series will be added to its list of storm names. Fans are invited to choose between Timmy and Shaun The Sheep.
The Met Office, which names storms to raise awareness and ensure public safety, has traditionally used human names. However, this initiative marks a departure from that practice, incorporating beloved animated characters into the naming process.
“We want to engage the public in a fun and unique way while maintaining our commitment to storm naming,” said a Met Office spokesperson. “Wallace and Gromit are iconic figures, and we believe this will resonate with fans of all ages.”
Voting is open on the Met Office website, with the winning character set to be announced next month. The chosen name will be used for the next storm that meets the criteria for naming.
This initiative comes amid a series of other notable events. In Glasgow, police have launched an investigation into a double murder (Glasgow Double Murder: Police Launch Investigation into Two Deaths). Meanwhile, the US saw the death of its oldest inmate, who was spared execution eight times (US Oldest Inmate, Spared Execution Eight Times, Dies at 101).
In Kenya, a helicopter crash at Mount Ololokwe has resulted in six confirmed deaths (Helicopter Crash at Mount Ololokwe: Six Confirmed Dead in Kenya). Closer to home, a track defect was uncovered following a train derailment in Lewes (Track Defect Uncovered Following Lewes Train Derailment).
The Met Office’s storm naming system aims to simplify communication about severe weather, making it easier for the public to understand the potential impact. By incorporating popular culture into this system, the organization hopes to increase public engagement and awareness.
