POLICY WIRE — London, UK — A new study indicates that the implementation of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has led to improved lung growth in children. The research, which analyzed data from multiple sources, suggests a correlation between reduced air pollution and better respiratory health among young residents.
The ULEZ, introduced in April 2019, requires older, more polluting vehicles to pay a daily charge to drive within a specified area of London. The zone has been expanded over time to cover a larger part of the city, aiming to reduce nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM) levels.
According to the study, areas within the ULEZ have seen a significant decrease in air pollution levels. This reduction is believed to have a direct positive impact on the lung function of children living in these areas. The research team emphasized the importance of continued monitoring and potential further expansions of the ULEZ to maximize health benefits.
The findings come as London Mayor Sadiq Khan has pledged continued support for the ULEZ, aiming to further reduce air pollution and improve public health. The Mayor has also announced plans to send vehicles that would otherwise be scrapped under the ULEZ scheme to Ukraine, providing aid while supporting environmental goals.
“The ULEZ is a crucial part of our efforts to clean London’s toxic air and protect the health of all Londoners, especially our children,” said Khan. “We will continue to expand and enforce the ULEZ to ensure we are doing everything we can to improve air quality and public health.”
The study adds to a growing body of evidence supporting the health benefits of low emission zones. Previous research has linked such zones to reductions in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as mortality rates.
