POLICY WIRE — London, UK — A salmonella outbreak in the UK has resulted in one death and hundreds of illnesses, predominantly in England, according to health officials. The outbreak is believed to be linked to the consumption of imported eggs.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed the outbreak, noting that the majority of cases have been reported in recent weeks. “We are investigating a cluster of salmonella cases linked to imported eggs,” a UKHSA spokesperson stated.
The specific source of the contaminated eggs remains under investigation. Health authorities are urging consumers to ensure eggs are thoroughly cooked before consumption to mitigate the risk of infection.
Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, typically appearing 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. Most individuals recover without treatment within 4 to 7 days. However, severe cases may require hospitalization.
This outbreak underscores the importance of stringent food safety measures and the need for continuous monitoring of imported food products. The UKHSA is working with relevant agencies to identify the exact source and prevent further contamination.
