POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The United Kingdom is bracing for a week of extreme weather variability, marking the most changeable week since June. An amber weather warning has been issued, cautioning the public of potential hazards.
Southern Water has announced the implementation of a hosepipe ban, the first in 50 years, affecting 900,000 customers in Kent and Sussex. The ban, set to commence on August 5, prohibits the use of hosepipes for watering gardens, cleaning windows, and filling swimming pools.
"We are facing an exceptionally dry period, and this measure is necessary to ensure sustainable water usage," stated a Southern Water spokesperson.
The Met Office has forecasted a mix of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for the southern regions, while northern areas are expected to experience unseasonably high temperatures, exacerbating the drought conditions.
In response to the ongoing water supply crisis, the UK government is considering additional water restrictions. These may include limitations on car washes, public swimming pools, and professional window cleaners.
The Environment Agency has issued warnings about the potential impact on agriculture and wildlife, urging farmers and households to adopt water-saving measures.
