POLICY WIRE — Jakarta, Indonesia — A powerful earthquake struck Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province on Monday, resulting in at least 68 confirmed fatalities and nearly 1,600 reported aftershocks. The magnitude of the initial quake and its exact location remain under assessment by seismic experts.
Rescue operations are underway in the affected regions, with emergency services working to provide aid to those impacted. Authorities have cautioned residents to remain vigilant due to the ongoing seismic activity.
The quake caused significant structural damage, with numerous buildings collapsing in the town of Reo. Local residents described scenes of chaos and panic as the ground shook violently.
“We felt the earth move beneath us, and everything around us started to crumble,” said a local resident, who declined to be named. “It was terrifying. We did not know when it would stop.”
The Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has deployed teams to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts. They are working in conjunction with local authorities to ensure that aid reaches those in need as swiftly as possible.
International aid organizations have also expressed their readiness to assist. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that they are monitoring the situation closely and stand prepared to offer support.
Experts warn that aftershocks could continue for several days, posing additional risks to the already vulnerable infrastructure. Residents have been advised to stay away from damaged buildings and to seek shelter in open areas.
The Indonesian government has activated its emergency response protocols and is in communication with international partners to secure any necessary assistance. Further updates are expected as the situation evolves.
