POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Sainsbury’s has temporarily ceased the use of AI-powered cameras in its stores following an incident where a customer was incorrectly identified as a shoplifter.
Matt Arnold, a shopper at a Sainsbury’s location, reported being asked to leave the store after the AI system flagged him as a potential thief. “I was asked to leave the store after being wrongly flagged as a shoplifter,” Arnold stated.
The supermarket chain has not provided specific details on the number of stores affected or the duration of the suspension. However, the incident has sparked a broader conversation about the reliability and ethical use of AI in retail security.
Sainsbury’s issued a statement acknowledging the pause: “We are reviewing our AI camera systems to ensure they meet our high standards for accuracy and fairness. Customer trust is our priority.”
This incident comes amid growing concerns over the use of AI in various sectors, including retail, where false positives can lead to significant customer dissatisfaction and potential legal repercussions.
The company has yet to announce when the cameras will be reactivated or what measures will be taken to prevent future misidentifications.
