POLICY WIRE — Lusaka, Zambia — President Hakainde Hichilema is poised for an outright win in Zambia’s presidential election, according to preliminary results. However, the opposition has raised allegations of violence and a biased campaign environment.
International and local observers have reported incidents of violence, including an armed raid on an opposition party office. The opposition claims that the electoral process has been skewed in favor of the incumbent.
“There have been reports of intimidation and violence that have created an uneven playing field,” said an observer from the Electoral Commission of Zambia. “These incidents are concerning and could impact the integrity of the election.”
The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has called for a thorough investigation into the alleged armed raid on their campaign office. “This is a clear attempt to undermine our campaign and suppress our supporters,” said a UPND spokesperson.
President Hichilema, who is seeking re-election, has denied any involvement in the reported violence. “We are committed to a free and fair election,” he stated. “Any allegations of misconduct should be investigated transparently.”
The Electoral Commission of Zambia has urged all parties to remain calm and await the final results, which are expected to be announced in the coming days. The commission has also promised to look into all allegations of electoral malpractice.
