POLICY WIRE — Jerusalem, Israel — Violence in the occupied West Bank has escalated significantly under the far-right government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to multiple reports and international observers.
The surge in violence is attributed to increased activities by Israeli settlers, often supported or tacitly endorsed by elements within the Israeli government. Recent incidents have included property destruction, physical assaults, and intimidation tactics targeting Palestinian communities.
United Nations officials and human rights organizations have condemned the actions, calling for greater accountability and protection for Palestinian civilians. Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, has accused Israel of “outsourcing coercion” to West Bank settlers.
In a recent statement, Albanese said, “The Israeli government’s failure to rein in settler violence is a violation of international law and human rights standards.”
The Israeli government has faced mounting international pressure to address the violence. European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has urged Israel to take “immediate and effective action” to protect Palestinian civilians and hold perpetrators accountable.
Tensions have further heightened with controversial statements from Israeli officials. An Israeli minister recently advocated for nightly killings of Palestinians in Gaza, sparking widespread outrage and calls for disciplinary action.
Meanwhile, Hamas has urged the international community to intervene, calling on the Board of Peace to compel Israel to adhere to a proposed Gaza plan post a recent meeting with former US advisor Jared Kushner.
The situation remains volatile, with both sides accusing the other of provocations and escalations. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with many calling for a renewed push towards a peaceful resolution.
