POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Authorities across the United Kingdom have seized a record number of illegal e-bikes, prompting a stern warning from the police. Sergeant Stuart Ford, who leads the cycle team at City of London Police, described illegal e-bikes as ‘a menace.’
The surge in seizures comes amid growing concerns over the safety and legality of e-bikes on UK roads. According to recent data, the number of confiscated e-bikes has nearly doubled in the past year.
Sergeant Ford emphasized the dangers posed by these unregulated vehicles. “Illegal e-bikes are not only a hazard to the riders but also to other road users,” he said. “We are seeing an increasing number of accidents and injuries linked to these bikes.”
The police have attributed the rise in illegal e-bikes to a lack of stringent regulations and the ease with which these vehicles can be purchased online without proper documentation. Many of these bikes do not meet the UK’s safety standards and are often modified to increase speed, further endangering public safety.
In response to the growing issue, law enforcement agencies are calling for tighter regulations and better enforcement mechanisms. “We need clearer guidelines and more robust checks to ensure that only compliant e-bikes are on our roads,” Sergeant Ford added.
The public has been urged to report any suspicious e-bike activity to the authorities. “If you see an e-bike that looks out of place or is being ridden recklessly, please report it,” said a spokesperson for the National Police Chiefs’ Council.
Efforts are also underway to educate the public about the dangers of using illegal e-bikes. Campaigns highlighting the risks and legal consequences are being rolled out in collaboration with local councils and community groups.
As the UK grapples with this emerging issue, the focus remains on enhancing road safety and ensuring that all vehicles, including e-bikes, adhere to the law.
