AI Training Jobs Rise as Workers Worry About the Future of Work

POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, more professionals are finding themselves in a unique position: teaching machines how to perform tasks that once required human expertise. Robbie Hiser, a music producer, is one such individual who has contributed to the development of AI models by sharing his creative insights with Mercor, a company working to improve AI capabilities across multiple industries.

Mercor, which operates in the multibillion-dollar sector of AI development, has enlisted over 100,000 freelancers from diverse fields to train AI systems. Despite this growing trend, many trainers like Hiser believe their roles will not be replaced by the very tools they help build. He argues that creative endeavors, such as songwriting, require a depth of human experience that AI cannot replicate.

However, concerns about AI’s impact on employment are widespread. A Pew Research study shows that nearly three-quarters of Americans fear AI could threaten their jobs. Meanwhile, a McKinsey report predicts that up to 11 million U.S. workers may need to transition to new careers by 2035 due to automation. While some see AI as a tool for enhancing productivity, others warn of potential job losses and social disruptions if the technology is not carefully managed.
