POLICY WIRE — Moscow, Russia — Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Russia will retaliate in kind if the European Union seizes vessels believed to be part of the so-called “shadow fleet” evading sanctions against Russia. The EU is currently deliberating stricter measures to target these vessels.
In a statement, Putin said, “If the EU proceeds with the seizure of our vessels, Russia will be forced to take reciprocal actions. We will not stand idly by while our assets are targeted.”
European states are considering enhanced enforcement mechanisms to identify and immobilize vessels suspected of circumventing sanctions imposed following Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The shadow fleet comprises ships that have reportedly been reflagged or are operating without clear ownership to avoid detection.
An EU official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the bloc is exploring legal and operational strategies to effectively tackle sanction evasion. “We are committed to ensuring that sanctions are fully enforced and that those attempting to bypass them are held accountable,” the official stated.
The potential EU actions come amid growing international pressure to tighten the noose on Russia’s economic capabilities. The sanctions, initially imposed in 2014 and significantly expanded in 2022, aim to curtail Russia’s financial and military resources.
This development follows a series of measures by Western nations to restrict Russia’s access to global markets and financial systems. The G7 nations have also pledged to maintain pressure on Russia until it ceases its military actions in Ukraine.
The situation underscores the escalating tensions between Russia and the West, with both sides prepared for further confrontations. As the EU finalizes its strategy, the global community watches closely for the next moves in this high-stakes geopolitical chess game.
