Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle Flown from Wales to Caribbean

POLICY WIRE — Cardiff, Wales — A Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, one of the rarest marine turtles, was successfully relocated from Wales to its native Caribbean Sea after being found stranded on a Welsh beach.

The turtle, discovered by local beachgoers, was in a weakened state and required immediate medical attention. Following stabilization, wildlife officials arranged for its transport to a rehabilitation center in Texas, from where it was eventually released into its natural habitat.

“This species is critically endangered, and every individual counts,” said Dr. Helen Thomas, a marine biologist involved in the rescue. “The successful relocation of this turtle is a international cooperation in wildlife conservation.”

Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are known for their unique nesting habits, often congregating in large numbers on specific beaches for nesting—a phenomenon known as an “arribada.” However, their population has drastically declined due to habitat loss, pollution, and accidental capture in fishing gear.
