POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The United Kingdom is preparing for its most complete solar eclipse in 27 years, an event that will see the Moon block out the Sun across Europe. This celestial spectacle, the best since 1999, is expected to draw sky watchers from all corners of the country.
For those unable to obtain solar glasses, experts have provided alternative methods to safely view the eclipse. “While solar glasses are the safest option, there are other ways to observe the eclipse without risking eye damage,” said Dr. Emily Carter, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich.
One recommended method is the pinhole projector technique. “By making a small hole in a piece of cardboard and projecting the image of the Sun onto another surface, viewers can safely observe the eclipse,” Dr. Carter explained.
Another method involves using binoculars or a telescope with a solar filter. “Ensure that the filter covers the front end of the device to protect your eyes from harmful solar radiation,” she added.
The eclipse is expected to be most visible in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, where the skies will darken significantly. Local authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions. “We encourage everyone to follow safety guidelines to ensure a enjoyable and safe viewing experience,” said a spokesperson for the Lincolnshire Council.
As the excitement builds, the event is also expected to boost local economies. “Despite stagnant bookings, the partial solar eclipse has driven significant footfall in the region,” noted a report from the Yorkshire Tourist Board.
