Cruise Passenger Sues After Rabies Scare from Bahamas Pig Bite

POLICY WIRE — City, Country — New York resident Jason Gordon has filed a lawsuit following a distressing incident during a ‘swim with the pigs’ excursion in the Bahamas. According to court filings, Gordon sustained a bite from one of the pigs, which drew blood and led to fears of rabies exposure.

The excursion, a popular tourist activity, allows visitors to interact with the semi-wild pigs that inhabit certain Bahamian islands. Gordon’s lawsuit alleges that the tour operators failed to adequately warn participants of the potential dangers associated with close contact with the animals.

“During the excursion, one of the pigs clamped down on my right leg and drew blood,” Gordon stated in the court filings. Following the incident, Gordon sought immediate medical attention due to concerns over possible rabies transmission.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and is typically transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. Although human cases of rabies are rare, the disease is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.

The lawsuit seeks compensation for medical expenses, pain — and suffering, and other damages. It highlights the need for better safety protocols — and clearer warnings for tourists engaging in wildlife interactions.
