POLICY WIRE — Copenhagen, Denmark — The Danish government has introduced new measures to combat academic dishonesty facilitated by artificial intelligence (AI). Students aged 16 to 19 will be required to orally defend their written essays as part of their assessments, according to an announcement made by the Ministry of Education.

In addition to the oral defense requirement, students at the upper secondary school level, known in Denmark as gymnasiet, will be encouraged to complete written assignments under controlled conditions at school. This includes monitoring of their computer screens to ensure academic integrity.

The measures are part of a broader initiative to address the rising concern over AI-enabled cheating in educational settings. The government believes that these steps will help maintain the integrity of student assessments and ensure that academic achievements reflect genuine effort and understanding.
