POLICY WIRE — Washington, DC — The incidence of dengue fever in the United States is rising, with both domestic cases and cases among travelers increasing since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral infection, has been reported in multiple states. The rise in cases is attributed to increased mosquito activity and heightened travel to regions where dengue is endemic.
“We’re seeing a concerning trend in the number of dengue cases, both among those who have traveled abroad and those who contracted the disease within the United States,” said Dr. Jane Smith, a CDC epidemiologist. “It’s crucial for individuals to take preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites.”
Dengue fever symptoms include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding. In severe cases, dengue can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever, a potentially fatal complication.
The CDC has identified several states with elevated dengue activity, including Florida, Texas, — and California. Health officials in these states are urging residents to eliminate standing water, use insect repellent, and wear protective clothing to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
Travelers returning from dengue-endemic regions, such as Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, are advised to monitor their health closely for symptoms and seek medical attention if they develop.
The increase in dengue cases underscores the importance of ongoing public health efforts to control mosquito populations and educate the public about the risks associated with mosquito-borne diseases.
