POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Gatwick Airport is set to commence the development of its second runway after the Court of Appeal dismissed a legal challenge brought by local campaign groups. The £2.2bn project aims to increase the airport’s annual flight capacity by approximately 100,000.

The Court of Appeal upheld an earlier High Court ruling that allowed the expansion plans to proceed. This decision clears the way for the airport to move forward with the project, which is expected to significantly boost Gatwick’s operational capabilities.

Local campaign groups had sought to overturn the High Court’s decision, arguing various environmental and community impact concerns. However, the Court of Appeal found no grounds to halt the project, enabling Gatwick to proceed with the construction.

The addition of a second runway is projected to enhance Gatwick’s position as Britain’s second-busiest airport, facilitating increased passenger throughput and potentially reducing congestion at other major UK airports.
