Death Toll Reaches 87 in Devastating Assam Floods

POLICY WIRE — Guwahati, India — The death toll in India’s flood-stricken Assam state has risen to 87, with hundreds of thousands displaced due to severe monsoon rains. Flood victims are now residing in makeshift shelters as authorities struggle to manage the widespread devastation.

The monsoon season has brought relentless rains to the region, leading to the inundation of vast areas. Entire villages have been submerged, leaving residents with no choice but to seek refuge in temporary shelters. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has been coordinating rescue and relief efforts, but the scale of the disaster presents significant challenges.

Officials report that over 4.5 million people have been affected by the floods, with more than 1,500 villages completely or partially submerged. The Brahmaputra River — and its tributaries have breached their banks, exacerbating the situation. The Indian government has deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to assist in rescue operations. the military has been called in to help with evacuations — and the distribution of essential supplies. Despite these efforts, many areas remain inaccessible due to the floodwaters.

Local authorities are urging residents in low-lying areas to move to higher ground immediately. The meteorological department has warned that more rainfall is expected in the coming days, which could further aggravate the situation.

In a press statement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We’re doing everything possible to ensure the safety and well-being of our people. The situation is grim, but we’re committed to providing all necessary assistance to those affected by the floods.”

International aid organizations have also expressed their willingness to support the relief efforts. The United Nations — and several NGOs are preparing to send teams to assist with the ongoing crisis.

As the floodwaters begin to recede in some areas, the focus will shift to long-term recovery — and rehabilitation. The state government is expected to announce a comprehensive relief package to help those affected rebuild their lives.
