10-Year-Old Boy Recalls Nothing of Lifeguard Rescue from California Surf

POLICY WIRE — City, Country — A 10-year-old boy who was rescued by a teenage lifeguard from rough surf off the California coast has no recollection of the dramatic incident, according to reports. The boy was swept off his feet by a large wave in shallow water.

The rescue occurred at a popular beach along the California coast, where the boy had been playing in the surf with family members. A sudden, powerful wave knocked him down — and pulled him into deeper water. A nearby lifeguard, a 16-year-old trainee, noticed the boy struggling — and quickly swam out to reach him.

The lifeguard, who has been identified as John Doe, managed to grab hold of the boy — and bring him back to shore. “I saw him go under — and I just went after him as fast as I could,” Doe said. “I was scared, but I knew I had to help him.”
