Russia Accused of War Crime in Ukraine Market Drone Attack

POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Ukrainian authorities have accused Russia of committing a war crime following a drone attack that targeted a civilian market vendor. The incident, captured on video, has sparked international outrage.

In a statement, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba condemned the attack, describing the drone’s pilot as a “sadist” who knowingly targeted a civilian. “This is a clear violation of international humanitarian law,” Kuleba said. “Targeting civilians is a war crime, — and those responsible must be held accountable.”

The video, which has been circulated widely on social media, shows a drone hovering over a market before releasing an explosive device that strikes a vendor. The vendor, who was reportedly selling fruits — and vegetables, was severely injured in the attack.

The United Nations and several international human rights organizations have called for an immediate investigation into the incident. “We’re deeply concerned by the reports of this attack — and the apparent targeting of a civilian. This must be thoroughly investigated,” said a spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office.

Russia has denied any involvement in the attack, with the Ministry of Defense stating that their forces don’t target civilians. “These allegations are false — and part of a disinformation campaign against Russia,” a ministry spokesperson said.

The incident has further escalated tensions between Ukraine and Russia, which have been engaged in a protracted conflict since 2014. The use of drones in civilian areas has been a contentious issue, with both sides accusing each other of violating international law.
