POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Apple has launched a legal challenge against the UK government’s demand for access to encrypted iCloud data of British users. This move comes a year after the Home Office agreed to abandon a similar previous request.

The US tech giant filed the legal complaint last month at the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT), an independent court with the authority to investigate claims of unlawful actions by UK intelligence services.

The Home Office’s fresh request seeks ‘backdoor’ access to highly encrypted iCloud data, prompting Apple to take legal action to protect user privacy and data security.
