Aung San Suu Kyi Appears Healthy in First Outside Contact in 2.5 Years

POLICY WIRE — Yangon, Myanmar — Newly released photographs from Myanmar’s military government depict Aung San Suu Kyi in her first confirmed meeting with an external official in over two and a half years. The images show the former State Counsellor meeting with a representative from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The meeting marks a significant development as it’s the first verified external contact with Suu Kyi since her detention following the military coup in February 2021. The coup has led to widespread international condemnation — and ongoing civil unrest within the country.

Suu Kyi, who has been held incommunicado, appears healthy in the photographs. The ICRC, known for its neutral and impartial humanitarian work, confirmed the meeting but didn’t disclose further details about the discussions or Suu Kyi’s current conditions.

International pressure has been mounting on Myanmar’s military rulers to grant access to Suu Kyi and other detained political figures. The United Nations and various human rights organizations have repeatedly called for the release of all political prisoners and for an end to the violence perpetrated by the military junta.

The military government has faced severe sanctions and diplomatic isolation in response to the coup and the subsequent crackdown on dissent. Despite this, the junta continues to maintain its grip on power, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the country.
