Tragedy in Indonesian Waters: Ferry Fire Claims Five Lives, 41 Missing

POLICY WIRE — Jakarta, Indonesia — A ferry carrying at least 250 passengers caught fire off the coast of Madura Island, Indonesia, resulting in five confirmed deaths and 41 individuals reported missing. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning as the vessel was en route from Surabaya to Gilli Island.

Local authorities reported that the fire broke out in the engine room, quickly spreading to other parts of the ferry. Passengers were seen jumping overboard to escape the flames. Rescue teams from the Indonesian Search — and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) were immediately dispatched to the scene.

“We’re doing our utmost to rescue as many people as possible,” said Basarnas spokesperson, Agus Wibowo. “The operation is ongoing, — and we’re coordinating with local fishermen and nearby vessels to assist in the search.”

Survivors recounted scenes of chaos as the fire rapidly engulfed the ferry. “There was smoke everywhere, — and people were screaming,” said one survivor, who wished to remain anonymous. “I jumped into the water with my children — and swam until we were picked up by a fishing boat.”

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that an electrical fault may have sparked the blaze, but officials haven’t ruled out other possibilities.

This incident comes amid heightened concerns over maritime safety in Indonesian waters, where ferry accidents are not uncommon due to outdated vessels and lax safety standards. In 2018, a ferry sank in the Flores Sea, resulting in the deaths of over 160 passengers.

The Indonesian government has promised to improve safety measures — and regulations for ferry operations. “We will conduct a thorough investigation and take necessary actions to prevent such tragedies in the future,” said Transportation Minister, Budi Karya Sumadi.

As of now, 204 passengers have been accounted for, with medical teams attending to those requiring treatment for burns and other injuries. The search for the missing continues, with additional rescue vessels — and aircraft deployed to the area.
