POLICY WIRE — Jakarta, Indonesia — A ferry traveling in Indonesian waters caught fire on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of five passengers and leaving 41 others missing, according to officials from the regional Surabaya Search and Rescue Agency.
The agency reported that 225 individuals were rescued from the vessel. Some passengers were forced to jump overboard and were subsequently picked up by a nearby ship, as confirmed by Basarnas, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency.
The incident occurred as the ferry was en route, prompting an immediate response from multiple rescue vessels. Four additional ships were deployed to assist in the search — and rescue operations.
Authorities are continuing their efforts to locate the missing passengers — and determine the cause of the fire. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
