Russian Missile and Drone Attack Kills Civilians in Kyiv
Overnight attack by Russian missiles and drones on Kyiv results in civilian deaths and injuries, escalating tensions in the region.
POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — An intense Russian missile and drone attack targeted the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv overnight into Saturday, resulting in civilian casualties and injuries. Several civilians were killed, — and more than 20 people were wounded in the assault.
The attack marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia — and Ukraine. Local authorities confirmed the casualties — and are assessing the damage. Emergency services worked through the night to attend to the wounded and secure the affected areas.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, calling it a deliberate attempt to terrorize the civilian population. He reiterated Ukraine’s urgent need for advanced defense systems, including Patriot missiles, to protect its cities from such attacks.
The international community has expressed concern over the escalation. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called for an immediate de-escalation — and urged Russia to cease its aggression. The United Nations has also called for a cessation of hostilities and for all parties to engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
This attack comes amid heightened tensions following recent Russian military movements near Ukraine’s borders. The Ukrainian government has been on high alert, implementing defensive measures to protect its citizens.
