POLICY WIRE — Bend, Oregon — The father who halted the deadly rampage at his daughters’ school vowed to eliminate the shooter immediately, according to a 911 recording made public on Tuesday. The audio captures the intense moment Kaylub Giamanco promised to intervene armed.
During the initial exchange, the 36-year-old stated, Someone’s at the school, at my daughters’ school with a gun. I have a gun, and I will shoot them right now if I have to.
Giamanco happened to be driving past Silver Rail Elementary when the October 15 attack began. He witnessed the shooter start the rampage before rushing in with his handgun to stop the violence.
The incident left three children, aged 5, 8, and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher dead. Giamanco killed the 16-year-old shooter, allowing his two daughters to survive the attack.
The 75-second recording highlights the panic as the shooting commenced when the gunman fired at a vehicle. Giamanco later explained to Oregon Public Broadcasting that he grabbed his weapon in a panic after seeing the shooter throw his gun over the fence and climb after it.
The call opened with the father simply shouting, “Oh my God.” After describing the scene, he repeated the school’s name to the dispatcher multiple times in distress.
When asked to confirm his intentions, Giamanco declared, This is my daughters’ school. I’m about to go kill this kid.
The dispatcher, unsure of the suspect’s identity, pressed for details. “No, I do not f—-ing know, I was just driving,” Giamanco replied.
As the call progressed, the father expressed extreme frustration at the ongoing violence, yelling, “God d—- it, they’re f—-ing shooting people. Come on!”
The conversation ended shortly after the dispatcher requested a description of the shooter, telling Giamanco that help was on the way.
