POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi surpassed his first 100 days as the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in late October. This milestone arrives as the military works to reclaim territory in northern Donetsk Oblast while fortifying defenses ahead of the winter season.
Appointed in July, Drapatyi is regarded as one of Ukraine’s most prominent generals and took the helm under significant pressure to implement vital structural and operational reforms within the military.
While two and a half months may be insufficient for a complete military overhaul, recent reports highlight the specific steps the new commander is taking to modernize the army.
Yurii Butusov, who commands a drone company operating on the front lines, noted that the military is becoming less rigid. Under Drapatyi, the volume of mandatory reports required from leadership has decreased, though the broader transformation remains ongoing.
These shifts are part of a comprehensive initiative led by Drapatyi’s team to reshape the Armed Forces. The strategy focuses on decentralizing the command structure and restructuring the organization of various military groups.
A primary goal of these new policies is to provide commanders stationed on the ground with significantly more autonomy to make critical tactical decisions during active operations.
