Zelenskyy Welcomes $2.1B Patriot Missile Deal But Warns of Deliveryays
President Zelenskyy praises a $2.1 billion US Patriot missile agreement but warns that deliveries could take years as Ukraine faces a brutal winter ahead.
POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the United States’ decisive move to authorize the sale of 500 highly sought-after Patriot missiles, while cautioning that the hardware may not arrive for several years.
The U.S. State Department confirmed on Friday that Washington has approved a $2.1 billion package featuring Patriot PAC-3 interceptors to assist Kyiv in its ongoing defense against Russian-launched drone and missile strikes.
In a social media response, Zelenskyy noted that the 500 PAC-3 interceptors represent a significant quantity that could provide a very potent defense system if available during the coming winter.
However, the president pointed out that the agreement stipulates deliveries might not begin until a few years from now. He urged urged American allies to identify a way to provide these interceptors during periods of immediate danger and high-priority operational need.
Earlier in the week, Zelenskyy mentioned that Kyiv had waited nearly a month for U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to authorize a shipment of missiles for both NASAMS and Patriot systems.
Ukraine continues to demand more interceptors to repel Russian assaults, a need that grows urgent as winter approaches. Russia has historically targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during winter months to undermine the nation’s resilience.
Concerns over dwindling interceptor stocks have prompted Russia to increase the frequency of missile attacks, leading to fears of a particularly harsh winter season for the Ukrainian population.
Zelenskyy stated that the United States and European partners currently hold sufficient stocks of PAC-3 interceptors in their inventories. He suggested the most effective strategy would be to deploy these existing stocks to Ukraine during the 2026–2027 winter and then replenish those partners’ armaments later using production already paid for by Ukraine.
The Patriot system is recognized as among the most sophisticated air defense technologies globally, capable of neutralizing various threats including ballistic missiles and incoming aircraft.
Most of Ukraine’s Patriots come through NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a program that allows partners to purchase military munitions and equipment from the United States.
According to NATO, by June 2026, allied nations had pledged over $6 billion in defense funding for Ukraine through this specific initiative.
