Wave of 15 Bomb Threats Against European Flights Sparks Fears of Coordinated Hybrid Attack
Over 15 European flights faced bomb threats in a single day. Experts warn of a deliberate, coordinated effort to disrupt continental travel.
POLICY WIRE — Paris, France — European air travel faced massive disruption on Thursday as at least 15 commercial aircraft were targeted with bomb threats, resulting in at least one emergency landing at a French military base.
While investigators confirmed no explosives were found on the planes and characterized the incidents as hoaxes, the sheer volume of threats marks a sharp increase in activity throughout the week.
Earlier in the week, British authorities dismissed threats against approximately seven flights, but the number of impacted journeys surged to over 20 on Thursday alone, causing significant delays for thousands of travelers.
Security experts are now questioning whether these incidents represent a coordinated campaign to destabilize transportation across the continent, though the identity of any potential orchestrators remains unknown.
The Thursday incidents followed a series of at least seven other threats across Europe that necessitated thorough aircraft searches, diversions, and in one instance, an escort by an Italian fighter jet.
While some airlines received the ruinous messages via email, the specific format and origin of the communications are still under investigation.
Air transport security specialist Paul Mason told the BBC that the frequency of such threats is typically low, labeling this week’s spike as highly unusual.
Mason noted on BBC Radio 5 Live that the threats were presented in a credible manner across multiple airlines, suggesting a deliberate act by a typical actor rather than a series of random, malicious calls.
