Washington Voters Approve Landmark Ban on Transgender Girls in Women’s Sports
Washington voters passed Initiative 638, banning transgender girls from participating in K-12 female sports and overturning a long-standing state policy.
POLICY WIRE — Olympia, WA — Voters in Washington state have approved a statewide measure that prohibits transgender girls from competing in girls’ sports. The victory for Initiative 638 effectively overturnes a state policy that had been in place since 2007.
According to the Associated Press, approximately 56% of voters opted in favor of the ban. This result marks a significant defeat for progressive advocates in the region, as the measure was the only ballot initiative expected to pass during Tuesday’s election.
As of Tuesday night, the initiative held a commanding lead with nearly 57% of the votes counted. In a statement regarding the outcome, supporters addressed female athletes, noting that the vote ensures their voices and concerns regarding fair competition are finally heard.
Data released by the Secretary of State’s office showed that 54% of participants supported the restriction. This shift is a notable turn for Washington and Colorado, two reliably Democratic states where elected officials have historically blocked efforts to exclude transgender women and girls from female athletics.
