POLICY WIRE — Washington, DC — The United States has announced new sanctions against top officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC), signaling a continued hardline stance by the Trump administration toward the institution. The sanctions target individuals deemed to be involved in ICC investigations into US personnel and allies.
In a statement, the US Department of State declared its intention to dismantle the ICC “brick by brick,” reflecting the administration’s long-standing opposition to the court’s actions. The sanctions include asset freezes and visa restrictions on the targeted officials.
“The United States will use every tool at its disposal to protect its sovereignty and its personnel from illegitimate prosecution by the ICC,” said a senior State Department official. “These actions are a clear message that we will not tolerate attempts to undermine our national interests.”
The ICC has been investigating allegations of war crimes committed by US forces in Afghanistan, as well as potential war crimes by Israeli forces in the Palestinian territories. The Trump administration has vehemently opposed these investigations, arguing that they lack jurisdiction over US citizens and allies.
This move follows a series of actions by the Trump administration to counter the ICC, including the imposition of visa restrictions on ICC officials in June 2020 and the authorization of potential financial sanctions.
International reactions to the US sanctions have been mixed. Some allies have expressed support for the US position, while others have criticized the move as undermining the rule of law and international justice mechanisms.
