United States to Implement New Country of Origin Labels for Domestic Seafood
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announces new labels for American-made seafood as lawmakers introduce the LABEL Act in Congress.
POLICY WIRE — Fort Myers, Florida — Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Friday that the United States plans to introduce a specialized label for all American-made seafood products. The initiative aims to provide shoppers with clearer information regarding the exact origins of their purchases.
During a statement on Friday, Kennedy outlined the administration’s broader push to increase transparency at grocery stores. The Trump administration intends to champion these new seafood labeling efforts to give buyers better insight into where their food products originate.
This development aligns with the rollout of the America First Seafood Strategy and the launch of Seafood.gov by President Donald J. Trump’s administration. The comprehensive plan is designed to bolster domestic seafood dominance and ensure robust marketplace clarity.
Concurrently, federal lawmakers are advancing legislative measures to codify these transparency standards. U.S. Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith and Tommy Tuberville introduced the Let Americans Buy with Explicit Labeling Act, known as the LABEL Act or S.3065, to mandate clear origin markers.
The proposed legislation requires that all seafood, including both wild-caught and farm-raised varieties, feature prominent labels indicating its country of origin and production method at retail locations. Representative Tim Moore also introduced companion legislation, H.R. 10580, in the House to amend the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946.
Under the proposed framework, origin details and production techniques must be displayed directly on the front of consumer packaging in a distinct font size. Supporters emphasize that these measures will empower consumers during National Seafood Month while simultaneously supporting the domestic seafood industry.
