POLICY WIRE — Yaroslavl, Russia — Overnight Ukrainian drones struck the Slavneft‑YANOS oil refinery, one of Russia’s largest, igniting a fire that forced emergency crews onto the site.
Yaroslavl region Governor Mikhail Yevrayev confirmed the attack as part of a large‑scale assault, noting that the refinery suffered damage and that two employees were injured.
Video footage from witnesses shows several blaze points, with the most intense fires near the main processing line. Local authorities reported that firefighting units were still battling the flames when the statement was released.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said it had downed 856 enemy drones over its territories overnight, a number it claims underscores the intensity of the ongoing conflict.
The strike adds to a growing pattern of Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure, with officials saying the response will be painful.
