POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — At least seven people have been reported dead following a series of ‘massive’ strikes launched by Russian forces, according to Ukrainian officials. Poland has scrambled its jets in response to the escalating situation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia had been planning the attack for several days. “This is not an impulsive act but a calculated move by the Russian leadership,” Zelensky said in a televised address.
The strikes, which targeted multiple locations across Ukraine, have prompted international condemnation. NATO has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the situation, while the European Union has announced additional sanctions against Russia.
Poland’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that its jets were scrambled as a precautionary measure. “We’re closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond to any threats to our national security,” a spokesperson said.
The United Nations has urged both sides to de-escalate — and engage in diplomatic talks. “The use of force will only lead to more suffering — and loss of life,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned.
