UK Rebrands Jerusalem Consulate as ‘Mission’ Following Israeli Closure Order
Britain keeps its Jerusalem diplomatic site open under a new name after Israel ordered a closure following UK sanctions on West Bank settlements.
POLICY WIRE — Jerusalem, Israel — The British consulate in Jerusalem has officially ceased its traditional functions as of Thursday, though the United Kingdom will maintain a limited diplomatic presence at the site. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar confirmed that the facility will no longer operate as a consulate, with 20 diplomats, including the consul general, departing the country.
The diplomatic shift follows an order issued by Saar on September 8, which mandated the closure of the consulate in response to London’s leadership in imposing Western sanctions on Israeli settlers involved in violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Saar noted that the decision to downsize the mission was reached through dialogue to prevent further escalation between the two nations.
While the building will no longer function as a consulate, Israel has permitted a task force of seven British diplomats to remain on the premises. Saar emphasized that the scope of their activities will be strictly limited, though the building itself remains the property of the British government.

British Foreign Minister Ed Miliband stated that the site will remain open and operational under the new designation of the UK Mission, Jerusalem. Miliband affirmed that the mission will continue to provide vital services and maintain engagement with the Palestinian people, despite the removal of the original diplomatic emblem and plaque from the building’s facade.
The dispute also involved broader retaliatory measures from Israel, including the expulsion of British representatives from a Gaza ceasefire monitoring center, a ban on British training for Palestinian Authority forces, and travel restrictions for 12 British citizens, primarily members of parliament. Saar confirmed on Thursday that these measures have been fully implemented.
The British consulate, which has operated for nearly 200 years, is located in East Jerusalem, an area captured by Israel in 1967. While Israel considers the city its undivided capital, most nations, including the United Kingdom, do not formally recognize Israeli sovereignty over the entire city.
