UK Government Condemns Anti-Immigrant Protests at Key Port After Channel Crossings

POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — The U.K. government has strongly criticized anti-immigration demonstrators who disrupted a major port in southern England following recent migrant arrivals from the English Channel.

Protesters, many wearing masks and dark clothing, clashed with police in Portsmouth late Sunday, attempting to block lifeboats from bringing migrants ashore and stopping buses transporting new arrivals to an asylum processing center.

The government issued a statement condemning the intimidating and thuggish behavior, emphasizing that while peaceful protest is protected, it must not lead to chaos. This event followed similar disruptions in Dover on Saturday, where masked groups blocked roads leading to the country’s busiest ferry port.

Both incidents appear to be organized by Daniel Thomas, a close associate of far-right activist Tommy Robinson. Despite efforts by successive governments to curb the number of people crossing the Channel — over 40,000 last year — the issue remains a polarizing topic, with figures like Nigel Farage of Reform UK labeling it a crisis.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s administration claims enhanced cooperation with France has cut the number of crossings this year by more than 40% compared to 2025. The most recent group of about 140 migrants arrived in Portsmouth from Normandy, making the journey significantly longer and more dangerous than usual.

A maritime agency confirmed that lifeboats, a coastguard helicopter, and an aircraft were involved in the operation to bring the migrants to shore.
