POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — A Rwandan man living in north London has become the first individual to face charges in the UK related to the 1994 Rwanda genocide, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Dr. Vincent Brown, known previously as Dr. Vincent Bajinya, 65, is accused of one charge of conduct ancillary to genocide and six counts of conduct ancillary to murder as a crime against humanity. The charges are based on alleged actions linked to the mass killings that occurred during the genocide.

Crown Prosecution Service official Frank Ferguson stated that Brown is suspected of directing and inciting acts of murder and genocide by others. The investigation was initiated in September 2019 following a request from the Rwandan government. The Metropolitan Police conducted a seven-year probe into individuals allegedly involved in the violence in the Rugenge district of Kigali in April 1994, where an estimated 800,000 people were killed over 100 days.
